Course coordinator’s overall view of the course:

The course is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of the theoretical foundations of sustainability issues. A range of relevant topics is addressed through lectures and seminar/workshop sessions. While the lectures were highly successful, the seminars were perceived as somewhat demanding for participants. Given the importance of the topic within the program, the course aims to promote substantial knowledge acquisition; however, the evaluation suggests that students would benefit more if the overall quantity of course material were reduced.

Comments on the results of the students’ course evaluation:

A total of 28% of students participated in the course evaluation. Of these respondents, half reported that the course enabled them to achieve the course objectives, while the other half reported that it did so to some extent. Overall, half of the respondents rated the course as very good or good, and the other half rated it as good to some extent.

Summary of the free-text responses in the course evaluation:

Students reported that the lectures were particularly strong—engaging, enjoyable, and rewarding to attend. They emphasized that the course supported their understanding of the interconnections between environmental and social issues. Students also noted that the course was discussion-intensive; many viewed this positively, stating that discussions with peers helped them generate new insights and develop their ideas.

At the same time, students felt that parts of the course material were not optimal. They commented that certain chapters in the reading materials were unnecessarily complex. They also found having two seminars (2+2 hours) on the same day exhausting. In addition, some students suggested they would have benefited more if the course content had been more explicitly adapted to an urban planning context.

All students except one passed the examination, and many achieved an A grade.
