Course Coordinator's Overall Assessment of the Course

Overall, the course has functioned well, despite the numerous public holidays during the term, which made planning somewhat challenging. We have observed a good level of engagement among the students, who demonstrated strong attendance, interest, and successfully completed the assessment components. Approximately half of the students chose to receive supervision on their papers when it was offered.

Comments on the Results of the Student Course Evaluation

A total of 30.26% (n = 13) of the 43 students responded to the course evaluation. The course was generally rated neither too high nor too low by students, with a median value of 3 received for their perceptions of the extent to which the course content and structure helped them achieve the course objectives, and their overall assessment of the course. Teacher engagement, availability, and support were assessed with a median of 4. The median number of hours students reported spending on their studies was 4, with 46.2% of students dedicating 30–39 hours and 30.8% spending 20–29 hours per week on the course. The workload was assessed with a median value of 3 (neither too high nor too low).

A Summary of the Open-Ended Responses from the Course Evaluation

Students expressed that they particularly appreciated the freedom in choosing methods for their assignments and the individual nature of the submissions, as opposed to group work. The last seminar, which provided feedback on their texts, was highly valued. Many found the topics interesting, especially the lectures that provided essential information about various police interventions, including the section on police interviews and the PEACE method. The seminars were seen as productive and well-structured, promoting discussions about each other’s work that led to meaningful conversations. Students enjoyed the individual assignments, allowing them to write on topics of their choice, which gave them more time for thoughtful engagement. The opportunity to submit work early for feedback was also highlighted as helpful in ensuring they were on the right track. Overall, the positive remarks emphasized the effectiveness of the course structure, the benefit of individual assignments, and the quality of both the teaching and the seminar discussions.

Students recommended improving the course structure by spreading lectures over a longer timeframe instead of condensing them into one week. This change would help alleviate information overload and promote better participation, particularly before the holiday.
Additionally, students highlighted the fast pace early in the course regarding literature and topic selection, which limited their ability to explore subjects in depth. They expressed interest in practical elements, such as testing the PEACE method, and suggested offering some lectures digitally during the holiday period to enhance content management. Overall, a more balanced schedule was deemed essential for a better learning experience.
